Yes, just 109 days to go until FreeStand Films present the premiere screening of the long awaited documentary “Dixie: The Goal King” at New Brighton Floral Pavilion……..details below.

John Keith writes...

They say that the scale of somebody’s celebrity status can be measured by the reactions and responses of other people. If so, there is no doubt that Dixie Dean was an A-Lister before the expression was even thought of.

I had a classic example of how Dixie’s presence affected others when one day in the 1970s I took the iconic centre forward as my guest to the old Liverpool Press Club which was then situated in the basement of Liverpool’s Adelphi Hotel. Members of the club, who used the premises as a working base, for socialising and occasionally to dine, were not easily impressed. Most were hard bitten journalists who “had seen it all” and were highly familiar with visits to the club by high flying politicians, artistes from the various theatre shows in the city and other luminaries.

Harold Wilson, as Prime Minister, made regular Friday visits after attending his Huyton constituency, complete with the squad of Special Branch officers always in attendance. And I remember playing a game of pool in the club in two teams

comprising the actress Yootha Joyce, Kenny Dalglish, “Daily Mirror” sportswriter Chris James and myself. I was paired with Kenny and if memory serves we lost to Yootha and Chris !

So famous people were in the club regularly with members hardly batting the proverbial eye lid. Until, that is …..the afternoon I walked in with Dixie. There was an unusual silence before the great man was almost mobbed by members and guests falling over themselves to shake hands and talk to him. Even Dixie, who had become used to being the centre of attention wherever he went, was somewhat taken aback by the sheer volume of praise showered on him. Being the master of under-statement that he was, and always with a droll humour, he said in my ear: “I think they’re glad to see us”. “No Bill, “ I replied. “They’re overjoyed to see you.”

The reaction that day reminded me that the acclaim for Dixie’s deeds for Everton and England had passed powerfully down the generations and continues today.

Dixie’s name has permeated through the decades and our film about his life and career is long overdue. So make sure you book now for a seat or seats at our debut screening!
